Before we get into the nitty-gritty, I just have to say WOW! This community really showed up and showed out ever since the first wave of the directory went live. After I posted the announcement last Monday, the subscriber count has nearly doubled and I am truly grateful to welcome more music fans to the party. Now, I have another announcement for you: the directory submission form has reopened!
Please read the following guidelines before making your submission.
First, I recommend reading the housekeeping section of last week’s newsletter if you haven’t already.
Next, here are the questions from the form:
Please provide a link to your newsletter publication.
After the first round, I updated the language to highlight that links to your newsletter/website are required. Since I update the directory listings in batches, missing links will delay entry processing for everyone. There’s a rhythm to updating each part of the directory and I’m aiming for a quicker turnaround time of mid-late January for this second round — it really depends on how many entries I receive. Since this is a community effort, I am kindly asking that you do your part and include a link!
ETA on 1/8/2025: An earlier version of this post listed this question as: What is your publication name? LINK REQUIRED.” I have updated the language again, because there have still been quite a few missing links.
What is your name? (feel free to skip this question if you prefer to remain anonymous)
This is pretty self-explanatory. To my anonymous writers, you can also insert a chosen pen name or the name of your publication in this space.
In a paragraph or less, what is the focus of your newsletter? You may copy your current newsletter description or expand the idea below.
Keep it concise, engaging, and evergreen in order to captivate the audience. This description will be used on any of the category tabs that you select.
Which of these categories best describes your role/interest in music? Select any or all that apply.1
Speaking of categories, here are the ones listed on the form:
Writer/Journalist
Musician
Playlist Curator
DJ/Selector
Producer
Reviewer/Critic
Composer
Historian/Scholar/Researcher
**NEW ADDITIONS** 2
Collector
Podcaster
Radio Host
Educator (as of 3/10/2025)
When considering which options to select, you might ask yourself: Is this role part of the current framework of my newsletter? Is this a notable aspect of my personal or professional history? How do I want folks to regard my work? In what ways am I open to being consulted or considered for collaboration? How does this align with my current or past aspirations?
Also, I have Podcaster and Radio Host listed separately on the form, but I will be updating the Podcaster article and graphic to say “Podcasters & Radio Hosts.”
Is there anything else you want readers to know about you?
Since I removed the “other” option from question #4, this last question is the space to explain any other roles/interests that are not listed above (especially if they are not music related, but you still want your audience to be aware of your background). For categories where I listed similar roles together (i.e. Reviewer/Critic), you can feel free to specify which one in this section.
Those are all of the questions on the directory submission form! From my experience, it takes just a few minutes to fill out, so please do so when you have the time to submit a quick, yet thoughtful entry.
The last thing I would like to highlight is this sentence from the introduction of the form: “One of the goals of this directory is to spotlight publications with smaller followings, but anyone is welcome to submit!”
I truly mean that: if you write about music or occupy any of the listed roles in any capacity (be it past or present), you are welcome to submit. However, you must submit your initial inquiry directly through the provided submission form (not as links under the category posts or via direct message). The directory is submission-based for organizational reasons, but also: it is important to me that you consent to being included and that you have an opportunity to define your work for yourself.
Without any further ado, please click this link to access the form. Go forth with making your submissions! And feel free to tag a music friend who still needs to submit in the comments or restacks. The form will remain open through the beginning of 2025. I will make another announcement when the time is winding down.
In the meantime, you can also send me your year-end favorite/best/top music list through this secondary form by 12/25 — I’m compiling them all in one community post. **Note: You do not need to have an active directory entry to be included in this roundup!
This concludes today’s announcement. Per usual, I will leave you with some music. I’m feeling generous so I’m including a few songs, featuring a theme of album covers in monochrome.3
Please do not feel obligated or tempted to apply for multiple categories solely to increase your visibility. The right people will find your work authentically.
Friendly reminder that newsletter writers with existing entries in the directory do not need to submit again to get an update. You can request changes via the Directory Maintenance Request Form.
To coordinate with the graphic I made for this post! (There are also some hints at the music I’ll be writing about on as the year wraps up.)
Missed this the first time around--submitted, thanks!
I just submitted my form, I hope I am not too late as I just saw the form. Thank you for this and Happy New Year!
